Andrew Lansley and Robert Sturdy campaign against the closure of TKA Tallent
08 February 2010
Andrew Lansley CBE MP for South Cambridgeshire today joined with Robert Sturdy MEP for the Eastern Region and the EPP-ED’s Coordinator for International Trade, to question the decision to close the TKA Tallent plant at Bourn. Mr Lansley wrote to the Chief Executive of Thyssen Krupp in protest of this decision and pledging to campaign against its closure.
Commenting Mr Lansley remarked
“Not only would the closure of the TKA Tallent Bourn plant ensure the loss of 313 permanent and over fifty temporary staff, but it would close a business that has proved itself productive, profitable and more efficient than other TKA sites”.
Mr Lansley’s remarks come amid evidence that the Bourn plant is the most efficient of all of TKA Talent’s European plants, as, in a series of tests taking into account Key Performance Indicators, Thyssen Krupp deemed the Bourn Plant as having a grading of 4.2, as opposed to 3.4 in other UK plants such as Llanelli.
In addition to this Union Officials have described how, thanks to staff, TKA Bourn remains a profitable operation, as even without the award of new contracts, current agreements would ensure the plant would remain profitable for the next 3 to 4 years.
Mr Lansley further remarked
“It seems astonishing that the Bourn plant is set to be closed when it can clearly demonstrate that not only is it profitable, but that it is the most efficient of Thyssen Krupp’s European subsidiaries. When staff at the Bourn site have proved themselves to be hardworking and capable, it is puzzling why Thyssen Krupp would want to outsource these functions to plants that are less experienced and efficient.
I have written to the Chief Executive of Thyssen Krupp to urge him to review his stance and I will continue to campaign for this decision to be reversed”.
Robert Sturdy MEP for the East of England added
“As far as I am concerned this is an illogical decision, the plant is producing quality products efficiently and profitably. It is a real tragedy that even present and future success is no guarantee of survival in this economic climate. I will be doing all I can in lobbying for this decision to be overturned.”
